Yes. Maisie’s Green Brae is built for families. There’s a children’s play area and a fairy garden on the grounds, a Wee Bairns section on the menu, and enough outdoor space that kids can actually move around while the adults sit and eat. 2150 Gold Hill Road, Tega Cay, SC.

Christine and Karl Schaefer came to Tega Cay because they wanted their kids to grow up in a town small enough to care — kids roaming free, neighbors knowing names. That’s the same reason they opened a restaurant here rather than somewhere else. The brae was always going to be a place where families could come and everyone at the table could relax.

Here’s a plain account of what it looks like when you bring yours.

The Outdoor Space

Half the restaurant lives outside, and that’s the part that works especially well for families with young children. The property has a children’s play area on the grounds — a proper one, not a corner with a plastic tub of crayons. There’s also a fairy garden, which is exactly what it sounds like and which tends to capture the attention of children between about three and ten in a way that earns parents an extra twenty minutes at the table.

The lawn is open. There’s room to run. Lawn games are out when weather allows. The outdoor space is not precious; nobody is going to give you a look because your kid is being a kid.

The Wee Bairns Menu

“Wee Bairns” is the Scottish phrase for little ones, and it has its own section on the menu. Approachable plates for kids who don’t want smoked brisket — food that travels well and doesn’t require negotiation. Portions are sized for smaller appetites and priced accordingly.

If your child has a dietary need or allergy, tell your server. Most plates can be adjusted. When something can’t be made to work, we’ll say so plainly and find something that can.

What to Know Before You Come with Kids

The Vibe

This is not a quiet restaurant. It’s not trying to be. There are evenings with live music, afternoons with lawn games, nights where the neighborhood turns out and the place gets full and loud and warm. That’s the point of it. Children fit into that naturally; they’re not a disruption.

If you’re looking for a hushed dinner for two, a Thursday evening after the band has wrapped is probably your window. If you want to let the kids loose while you eat an actual hot meal and have an adult conversation, Friday or Saturday afternoon — before the live music starts — is usually the right call.
